When Care.com initially came to WebDevStudios, the primary goal was to migrate two of their blog websites to the WordPress platform. The solution was a custom-built WordPress Multisite.
Since then, Care has remained with WebDevStudios as an ongoing website development retainer client. Recently, we completed a website redesign for the company. Keep reading to learn more about the various services WebDevStudios has provided Care.
Caring for Care
After migrating Care from its previous platforms to WordPress, WebDevStudios remained committed to our client and stuck around for the long game. Since its data migration and subsequent custom-built WordPress Multisite setup, WebDevStudios has continued to provide Care.com with monthly support. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Troubleshooting and debugging errors and defects
- Website enhancements
- Design updates
- Quality assurance
Care.com has access to the WebDevStudios engineering team for a designated amount of monthly hours as an ongoing website development retainer client. This relationship includes continuous development work on different areas of the custom-built WordPress Multisite setup that WebDevStudios developed for Care, including the main Care.com site, Care’s corporate site, and Care for Business.
Custom-Built WordPress Multisite
A WordPress Multisite network is a collection of websites with the same installation. They can also be configured to share plugins and themes.
Each individual site in a WordPress Multisite network is a virtual website, in the sense that it does not have its own directories on the server. However, the individual sites have separate directories for media uploads within the shared installation and separate tables in the database.
WebDevStudios built a WordPress Multisite configuration for Care, where all sites were set up as subdomains of Care.com. Visitors and search engines never see the internal subdomains for these sites. From their point of view, their journey remains with one brand on one website.
That’s what a successful WordPress Multisite network should look like.
Customized Features
Articles & Guides
Care.com required a special section of their WordPress Multisite network dedicated to providing guidance for caregivers and families. This component is called Care Guides.
This unique website project required creating a new site on Care’s custom-built WordPress Multisite network. Additionally, WebDevStudios developed custom blocks for easy content management.
Our team also created a custom post type with a meta field, allowing Care to have chapters as part of their user experience. This is essentially a “repeater” field, so Care’s website admin can easily manage the chapters of their online guides.
Block Modification
Care’s content team wanted to be able to publish podcasts on their blog and include transcripts, which can be very lengthy and disrupt the reader experience. They tried to use WordPress’ Accordion block to allow the reader to view the entire transcript or not; however, the block’s padding created too much white space and didn’t look good.
After bringing this problem to the WebDevStudios team, we were able to customize a solution to adjust the style of the WordPress Accordion block so that there’s less space above the block and within the accordion block itself.
